Bike Rodeos: Fun, Learning, and Safety for Young Riders

Bike Rodeos are engaging events designed to teach and promote bicycle skills, safety, and confidence among children. Each spring, Bicyclists of Iowa City (BIC) organizes and supports Bike Rodeos at local elementary schools.

These events are open to elementary school riders of all ages. Each Bike Rodeo features multiple stations and activities designed to help young cyclists develop safe riding skills, practice their techniques, and have fun. Activities include:

• Proper helmet fitting and bike safety checks,
• Learning hand signals and traffic rules, and
• Fun riding challenges to practice starting, stopping, and maneuvering.

Bike Rodeos are a collaborative effort involving BIC, elementary schools, local bike shops, and advocacy programs. BIC volunteers set up the activities, guide riders through each station, and ensure that all participants follow safety rules.

To support safety, BIC provides helmets to participants who forget theirs and gives free helmets to students who don’t own one. Additionally, BIC distributes bike safety materials and fun items like stickers and other bike-themed tchotchkes to participants.

You can help promote youth biking and safety by:

• Responding to BIC announcements in April to volunteer at individual Bike Rodeos, or
• Donating to support the purchase of children’s bike helmets. Donations can be made through the BIC donations page (BIC Donations). When entering your donation you may write Bike Rodeos in the Comment field.
